MUTANT ABILITY: Generation of darkness fields
SPECIALTY: Mutant Psychology
Proving herself to be above and beyond her peers at an early age, Lauren Atkinson's real skills shined as a friend. Not only did she show herself to be kind and considerate, she actively listened, becoming something of a confidant to others, and even helped them analyze their problems and address them in a reasonable fashion. It came as no surprise to her parents, once she was older, that she began to pursue psychology as an academic path. She continued to excel in her studies, even earning herself a scholarship fund as early as her sophomore year of high school. She continued to act as a sort of counselor for her peers, which resulted in her learning of quite a few confirmed and suspected mutants at her school. However, rather than let any faculty know, she pursued these individuals herself, wishing to understand the mutant side of the issue. More than once the leads proved to be false, but every now and again she would find a genuine mutant, and learn more about the hardships they faced, and what went through their minds in regards to their powers.
When her own powers manifested, she kept them a secret; partially because of the general public opinion of mutants, but also because she wished to continue her particular viewpoint when talking to other mutants. She hoped that, with the new insights she was gaining, she might be able to help change public opinion of mutants. She continued through graduation and into college, advancing in her curriculum and openly stating her desire to focus on mutant psychology, thus far an unheard-of concept. While this earned her some praise from her teachers, it didn't ingratiate her to some of her peers, who thus harassed her on a regular basis, resulting in some property damage, public altercations, and in one case, an assault charge. She noticed, through all of this, that her complaints were given only cursory attention unless she mentioned that she was human, and not a mutant. This enforced her drive to focus on mutant psychology, but also study the psychology of others regarding mutants.
Upon graduation, Lauren was immediately offered a job with Porter Solutions, an investment firm where she was promised a chance to practice her unique focus of psychology. While at first she appeared to be an on-site counselor and psych evaluator, more and more the employees began to trust her, and told her about things such as hiding their mutations from their employer, from their families, and the like. Lauren got a chance to see firsthand what it was like to be a mutant in the modern world, and took the lessons to heart.
When her employer began investing in a very private school, he asked Lauren to be his liaison with the school, acting as a counselor. The position was part of the agreement made with the school's headmaster, Professor Charles Xavier. Xavier took to Lauren immediately, finding her insight quite a valuable commodity at the school. He knew about her mutation, but promised he would not reveal it against her wishes. In turn, she would share as much information as she could to help him make a better school for all mutants, both student and faculty.
